CPR?
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is an emergency procedure that includes chest compressions, opening the airway, and rescue breaths. An easy skill to learn but crucial in an emergency that can occur at anytime when someone has stopped breathing, or has no pulse.
When
There are several factors that can lead up to CPR. Unconsciousness, breathing problems, cardiac arrest, drowning, drugs, exposure to smoke/inhalants, and electrical shock. Knowing when to perform CPR and when not to is just as important.
Why
CPR is to keep oxygen flowing in and out of the victims lungs and to keep that oxygenated blood flowing throughout the body by utilizing compressions along with rescue breaths. Early CPR can greatly increase the chances of survival.
Importance
A life saving technique that can save a stranger’s life, a friend, or family member. If CPR is given within the first two minutes of cardiac arrest, the chances of survival can double. A large number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims survived when bystander CPR was administered.
